NeuroKinetic Therapy® in Koh Samui

If your pain keeps coming back, there’s a reason. NeuroKinetic Therapy® (NKT®) finds what that is.

NKT® is a motor control-based assessment and treatment system that looks beyond the sore muscle to the movement pattern your brain has learned. Using precise manual muscle testing, we identify the specific compensation behind your pain and correct it at the source: the nervous system.

At Body Tune Up, NKT® comes straight from the source. Our director, Jory Serota, is one of the method's international instructors and teaches it to physiotherapists, doctors and movement professionals around the world.

Understanding it

What is NeuroKinetic Therapy®?

NeuroKinetic Therapy® was developed by David Weinstock, who has worked in manual therapy since 1973. It is built on a simple but powerful idea: the brain, not just the tissue, drives your movement patterns.

Your brain's motor control center learns and stores how you move. When a muscle gets injured, fatigued or inhibited, another muscle steps in to do its job. That's a compensation. It's a smart short-term survival strategy. The problem is that the brain can store that compensation as the new normal, long after the original injury has healed.

The overworking muscle becomes tight, sore and irritated. The underworking muscle stays switched off. Stretching, massaging or strengthening the area gives temporary relief, but the program running underneath hasn't changed, so the pain returns.

NKT® tests for those relationships directly and resets them.

How it shows up

Signs you are stuck in a compensation pattern

  • Pain that keeps coming back

It feels better after massage or stretching, then returns within days.

  • The tight muscle that never releases

Hamstrings, upper traps, hip flexors or calves that feel tight no matter how much you stretch them.

  • One side always gets hurt

The same knee, the same shoulder, the same side of the low back, again and again.

  • "I healed, but I never felt right"

An old ankle sprain, surgery or injury that recovered on paper, but movement never went back to normal.

The real cause

Why NKT® gets different results

Most treatment goes to where it hurts. NKT® goes to where the pattern is.

A classic example: a client comes in with a stiff, aching neck. Testing shows the deep neck flexors aren't firing, so the muscles at the back and side of the neck are doing double duty to hold the head up. Massage the neck and it relaxes for a day. Release the overworking muscle, reactivate the one that switched off, and give the brain a simple exercise to reinforce the new pattern, and the neck stops needing to guard.

The same logic applies to low back pain driven by a glute that has stopped working, knee pain driven by a lazy hip, and shoulder impingement driven by an inhibited stabilizer. The site of pain is rarely the site of the problem.

NKT® is used by physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, doctors, massage therapists, Pilates teachers and personal trainers worldwide, and it is one of the clearest tools available for answering the question every chronic pain client asks: why does this keep happening?

Our method

How an NKT® session works

  1. Movement & muscle testing

We assess how you move, then use manual muscle testing to find which muscles are inhibited (underperforming) and which are facilitated (overworking to compensate). This shows us your specific pattern, not a generic diagnosis.

  2. Release & reactivate

We release the overworking muscle with targeted hands-on work, then immediately activate the muscle that switched off. We retest on the spot so you can feel the difference in strength and movement in the session.

  3. Reprogram at home

You leave with one or two precise corrective exercises. They take a few minutes a day, and they are what teach your brain to keep the new pattern. This is the step that makes the change last.

NKT® across the Body Tune Up team

NKT® thinking runs through everything we do. Our physiotherapist, Tanny, has trained in NeuroKinetic Therapy® directly with Jory. Your visit

What to expect

Wear comfortable clothing you can move in, such as shorts and a t-shirt or sports top. NKT® sessions are active: you will be moving, resisting gentle pressure during muscle tests and feeling changes as we retest.

Many clients feel a clear change in strength, range or pain within the first session. Long-standing patterns usually need a short series of sessions, plus consistent home exercises, to hold. We will be honest with you about what to expect.

FAQ

NeuroKinetic Therapy® — common questions

What does NKT® treat?

NKT® is used for a wide range of musculoskeletal problems, including low back pain, disc problems, sciatica, neck pain, headaches, shoulder and rotator cuff issues, tennis elbow, TMJ, hip and knee pain, tendinitis and plantar fasciitis. It is most valuable when pain keeps coming back or other treatments have only helped temporarily.

Is NKT® painful?

No. The muscle testing is gentle. The release work can be firm on overworking muscles, but it is targeted and brief.

How is NKT® different from massage or physiotherapy?

Massage and most physiotherapy treat tissue. NKT® tests and corrects the movement pattern that is overloading the tissue. At Body Tune Up we often combine them: NKT® to find and correct the pattern, massage or physiotherapy to treat the tissue and rebuild capacity.

How many sessions will I need?

Some clients notice significant change after one session. Most long-standing problems need a few sessions, spaced out so the home exercises have time to reprogram the pattern.

Do I really need to do the home exercises?

Yes. The session opens the door. The exercises are what teach your nervous system to keep the new pattern. They are short and specific. Usually one or two moves, a few minutes a day.

I'm a practitioner. Can I learn NKT®?

Yes. Jory teaches all levels of NKT® and specialty courses internationally. Message us on WhatsApp or visit joryserota.com for upcoming dates.
