Applied Yoga® & Corrective Movement Therapy

This is not a yoga class. Applied Yoga® is therapeutic movement: yoga, remedial exercise, breath work and body awareness, prescribed with clinical precision to fix the way you move and keep your pain from coming back.

Hands-on treatment gets you out of pain. Corrective movement keeps you out of it. At Body Tune Up, this is the final and most important stage of your care: rebuilding strength, control and range so your body can handle what you ask of it.

Understanding it

What is Applied Yoga®?

Applied Yoga® was created by our director, Jory Serota, to bridge the gap between yoga, physiotherapy and strength training. It takes the best of yoga (mobility, breath, awareness and control) and applies it through the lens of anatomy, biomechanics and motor control.

Every movement has a purpose. Every pose is chosen, modified or progressed for your body, your injury and your goals. Nothing is done because "that's how the sequence goes."

The approach is laid out in Jory's book, Applied Yoga for Musculoskeletal Pain™: Integrating Yoga, Physical Therapy, Strength and Spirituality, an evidence-based guide for practitioners on helping clients with chronic and acute musculoskeletal pain through yoga and remedial exercise.

What is corrective movement therapy?

Corrective movement therapy is targeted exercise designed to fix the movement patterns behind pain and injury. That means waking up muscles that have switched off, restoring control through the end of your range and rebuilding the strength that lets joints stay healthy under load.

We combine Applied Yoga® with principles from NeuroKinetic Therapy®, Functional Range Conditioning (FRC®) and strength training, so your program is built for how you move, not a generic routine.

Who it's for

Who this is for

  • After treatment

You've had massage, physiotherapy or NKT® and you're feeling better. Now you want to make sure it stays that way.

  • Chronic & recurring pain

Low back, neck, shoulder, hip and knee pain that keeps returning, because the body has never been retrained to move differently.

  • Yogis & movement practitioners

You love your practice but certain poses hurt, you keep getting the same injury, or you want to practice with better mechanics and less wear and tear.

  • Athletes & active people

Runners, fighters, surfers, climbers and lifters who need usable, controlled range, not just flexibility.

The difference

Why corrective movement is essential

Flexibility without control is a liability. Strength without range is a restriction. Most people with recurring pain have one or both problems, and no amount of massage will fix them.

Stretching alone rarely fixes a tight muscle, because the tightness is often protective: your nervous system is guarding a joint it doesn't feel stable in. Build strength and control in that range and the nervous system lets go. That's the principle at the heart of Applied Yoga® and our corrective work.

Our method

How a session works

  1. Movement assessment

We assess how you move: mobility, stability, control, breathing and the patterns behind your pain. Where needed, we use NeuroKinetic Therapy® muscle testing to identify what's switched off and what's compensating.

  2. Targeted corrective work

A one-to-one session of therapeutic movement, including Applied Yoga® sequences, activation drills, joint control work and progressive strengthening, tailored and coached in real time.

  3. Your personal program

You leave with a short, specific home program designed to fit your life. We progress it session by session so you keep getting stronger, more mobile and more resilient.

He knows what it takes to rebuild a body, from both sides of the table.

Combined with the team

Corrective movement is where all our treatment comes together. Ael's massage and Tanny's physiotherapy calm the tissue and restore movement. Applied Yoga® and corrective movement make sure that movement is strong, controlled and yours to keep.

FAQ

Applied Yoga® & Corrective Movement — common questions

Do I need to be flexible or have done yoga before?

No. Applied Yoga® is therapeutic movement, not a class. Everything is adapted to where your body is today.

How is this different from a regular yoga class?

A class follows a set sequence for a group. Applied Yoga® is one-to-one, based on an assessment of your body and your pain, and every movement has a specific therapeutic purpose.

How is corrective movement different from physiotherapy exercises?

They overlap. Corrective movement goes deeper into control, mobility and the movement patterns behind your pain, and it often continues after hands-on treatment has done its job.

I'm a yoga teacher with recurring pain. Can this help?

Yes. Many of our clients are teachers and serious practitioners. We look at how you load your joints in practice and give you the tools to practice, and teach, with better mechanics.

How many sessions will I need?

Most clients benefit from a short series of sessions to learn and progress their program. The real change comes from what you practice between sessions.

Can I combine this with massage or physiotherapy?

Yes, and we recommend it. Hands-on treatment gets you out of pain. Corrective movement keeps you out of it.
