Understanding it

What is traditional Thai medicine?

Traditional Thai massage is one of the pillars of Thai traditional medicine. Its roots run back centuries, and the knowledge was preserved and taught in temples such as Wat Pho in Bangkok. In 2019 UNESCO recognized nuad thai as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Thai massage is done on a mat, fully clothed, with no oil. The therapist uses palms, thumbs, elbows, knees and feet to apply rhythmic pressure along the body's energy lines (sen), combined with assisted stretches and joint mobilization. It is sometimes called "lazy person's yoga" for good reason: you are moved through ranges you would struggle to reach on your own.

Who it's for

Why people choose Thai massage

  • Full-body stiffness

After long flights, long days at a desk or weeks of training, Thai massage restores movement through the whole body, not just one area.

  • Mobility & flexibility

The assisted stretching opens hips, hamstrings, spine and shoulders in ways static stretching on your own can't.

  • Recovery days

A strong complement to training, especially for yoga practitioners, runners and fighters who need range as much as strength.

  • Stress & nervous system reset

Slow, rhythmic pressure and breath-paced stretching help shift the body out of fight-or-flight. It is deeply calming without being passive.

The difference

Traditional technique. Clinical thinking.

Most Thai massage on the island follows the same fixed sequence for every client. Ours doesn't. Our therapists are trained in modern sports and medical massage, and they understand the anatomy underneath the tradition.

That means if your low back is sensitive, we modify the spinal twists. If one hip is far stiffer than the other, that side gets the extra attention. If you are recovering from an injury, we know which stretches to leave out. You get the benefits of the Thai tradition without the one-size-fits-all risk.

Our method

How a session works

  1. Check-in

We ask about injuries, sensitive areas, your activity levels and what you want from the session: mobility, recovery, relaxation or all three.

  2. Traditional Thai treatment

Rhythmic palm and thumb pressure along the sen lines, assisted stretching and joint mobilization, performed on the mat in loose, comfortable clothing.

  3. Tailored to your body

Techniques and stretches are adjusted to your body, your flexibility and any old injuries, so the session opens you up without overloading anything that is already irritated.

FAQ

Alternative Thai Medicine — common questions

Is Thai massage painful?

It is firm, and some stretches take you toward the end of your range, but it should never be painful. Tell your therapist and they will adjust immediately.

What should I wear?

Loose, comfortable clothing you can move and stretch in. Thai massage is done fully clothed with no oil.

Is Thai massage good for back pain?

For general stiffness, often yes. For an acute or disc-related back problem, some traditional stretches and twists are not appropriate. That's why we adjust the session, and why we may recommend medical massage or physiotherapy first.

How is this different from Thai massage on the beach?

The tradition is the same. The difference is the therapist. Ours are trained in anatomy, sports massage and injury management, so the session is adapted to your body instead of following a fixed script.

Can I have Thai massage if I'm injured?

Tell us about it first. Depending on the injury, we will modify the session or suggest a more targeted treatment at our facility.

How long should my session be?

90 minutes gives time for a complete full-body treatment, and 120 minutes lets us go deeper into stretching and problem areas. 60 minutes works well if you want to focus on specific areas.
