Corrective Exercise in Koh Samui

Treatment calms the pain. Corrective exercise stops it from coming back.

At Body Tune Up, corrective exercise is targeted, assessment-led rehab built around the exact muscles and movement patterns driving your pain. No generic handouts, no copy-paste routines. Every exercise has a job, and we know what that job is before we give it to you.

Understanding it

What is corrective exercise?

Corrective exercise is the use of specific, precisely chosen exercises to fix faulty movement. That means waking up muscles that have switched off, calming down the ones that are overworking to compensate, restoring control through your full range and rebuilding the strength your joints need to stay healthy under load.

It is not a workout. It is not stretching whatever feels tight. It is the part of rehab that changes how your body moves, which is why it is the part that makes results last.

How it shows up

Who needs corrective exercise

  • Pain that keeps coming back

Your back, neck, shoulder or knee feels better after treatment, then the same problem returns a few weeks later.

  • After an injury or surgery

The tissue has healed, but strength, balance and confidence in the area never fully came back.

  • Postural and desk-related pain

Forward head posture, rounded shoulders, stiff upper back and a low back that aches after long days sitting.

  • Athletes returning to sport

Runners, fighters, surfers and lifters who need to rebuild load tolerance before going back to full training.

The real cause

Why generic exercise doesn't fix it

Most exercise programs strengthen the muscles that are already doing the work. If your glutes have switched off and your low back and hamstrings are compensating, a standard gym routine just makes the compensation stronger.

Corrective exercise starts by finding out which muscles are underperforming and which are covering for them. We use functional movement assessment and NeuroKinetic Therapy® muscle testing to map your specific pattern, then choose exercises that retrain it. Fix the pattern, and the pain has no reason to come back.

Our approach is shaped by our director, Jory Serota, an international NeuroKinetic Therapy® instructor and the author of Applied Yoga for Musculoskeletal Pain™: Integrating Yoga, Physical Therapy, Strength and Spirituality. Corrective movement is at the heart of everything he teaches.

Our method

How corrective exercise works

  1. Assess

We look at how you move, test the muscles involved and find the compensation pattern behind your pain.

  2. Activate & correct

We start with precise activation drills to switch underperforming muscles back on and take load off the ones that have been overworking. You feel the difference in the session.

  3. Build & progress

We build strength, stability and control through your full range, then progress session by session toward the demands of your life or sport. You leave every session with a short, clear home program.

Your visit

What to expect

Wear clothes you can move freely in. Sessions are active and coached, so expect to spend most of the time moving rather than lying on a table.

Your first session includes an assessment so we know exactly what to work on. From there, most clients benefit from a short series of sessions to learn and progress their program, with a few minutes of home practice in between. The real change comes from what you do between visits.

FAQ

Corrective Exercise — common questions

How is corrective exercise different from going to the gym?

The gym builds general fitness. Corrective exercise targets the specific muscles and movement patterns behind your pain, based on an assessment of your body.

Do I need to be fit or flexible to start?

No. Every exercise is matched to where your body is today and progressed from there.

How long before I notice a difference?

Many clients feel a change in strength or movement within the first session. Lasting change usually takes a few weeks of consistent practice.

How much time do the home exercises take?

Usually 10 to 15 minutes a day. We keep your program short and specific so you actually do it.

Can I combine corrective exercise with massage or physiotherapy?

Yes, and we recommend it. Hands-on treatment calms the tissue. Corrective exercise changes how you move, so the problem doesn't return.

What's the difference between this and Applied Yoga®?

Both fix the movement patterns behind pain. Corrective exercise is built into our physiotherapy and focuses on targeted rehab exercise. Applied Yoga® is one-to-one therapeutic movement with Jory, using yoga, breath work and body awareness alongside corrective drills.
